"After
reading this book, I am proud to say that I was born in the same
town as Wilfred, a man who was skillful enough to have a successful
career in professional football, but also knew where his duty lay
when called upon."
Graham Taylor OBE, former England National Football
Team Manager
The Bartrops Arrive in Sheffield
Legend
in the family has it that my Great Great Grandfather, William
Bartrop, walked all the way from Worksop (some 18 miles) to make
his fortune in the steel city. His trade in Worksop was as a
'wood sawyer' and when he arrive he was set to work in Black's lumber yard
on Pond Street, near his new home.
William made his home in Pond Street,
in housing similar to that shown on this page. Unfortunately
(?), this area has been lost to us in one of the many slum
clearance programmes and now it is the Transport Interchange and
part of Sheffield Hallam University Campus.
